Topic: No external DNS or internet access when moved to new hardware

I had an attempt to move my current server to new hardware. What I did was powered down my main server, removed the 2 RAID1 disks, mounted them in an other server and then powered up that other server.

That all went mostly without a hitch. Local shared drives came up and local web based services came up as normal. I can also connect to the server using SSH without any trouble.

However, from the console on the server, the Internet test fails and also as my server (in server only mode) is serving the DNS on my LAN, DNS requests for the outside failed.

I tried to rerun the configuration and restart but this did not make a difference.

The only thing I can think of what the main difference between these boxes is that the main server has a dual NIC that I normally used in bonded mode. The other server (HP Mini) only has a single NIC.

But how does that explain that it happily serves local content but itself is unable to connect to the Internet? There is no change in the Internet gateway. It remained configured as it was with just a few ports forwarded to the server IP (which remained the same between the two different boxes).

In the end, I gave up and put the disks back in the main hardware, booted it and everything was back to normal with Internet services restored.

Anybody any idea as what the issue could be here or where I need to look?

Should I have disabled the bonding in the previous server before moving to the new hardware or am I barking up the wrong tree re. this issue?

make a copy of /home/e-smith/db/configuration file

than edit it, deleting all info about networking (the values, not the keys)

re-run configuration..

This shouldn't be necessary. A simple reconfigure from the console is all that is needed. If it's not, there may be a bug. Please, open a new bug with all relevant informations

Hardware differences may be the problem.
Unless the 2 machines are using identical (or at least very similar) hardware, including NICs, m/board & CPU, then you are likely to have problems swapping RAID disks to another server.

The correct & supported way is to do a backup, install the clean SME OS to the new server (which will install correct modules & drivers appropriate for the motherboard, CPUs & NICs etc, & then do a restore.

I would be looking at the gateway device. Does it still have the old server MAC address in its ARP cache? Can it ping your new server? Is there an L2 negotiation issue (e.g. link speed)?
