Boot problems

Alright, I have been scanning the board to see if anyone might have had the same problem, and have not found it.

I downloaded and extracted the iso image of 3.0 and then burned it.  I made a boot floppy and proceeded to boot and install but was met with the message "boot failure" just after loading initrd.img, right after it prints "Loading vmlinux".

I have a lab full of computers, and have tried to make the boot floppy on several computer, always with the same result.  I have tried booting on several machines as well -- no change.  I have even gone so far as to mount the iso image, and make the floppy from the mounted image.

If you have successfully made the floppy, please email a copy of it to me, or if there is a simple solution that will suffice.

Hi Jeremy,

There is a boot floppy image available at:

ftp://ftp.e-smith.net/pub/esmith-3.0/esmith-3.0-diskette.img

Perhaps that will work better. I wonder if it's possible something went wrong with the CD burning process and the CD is bad? Did you check the file sizes after downloading and uncompressing the CD image?

Good luck!

Thanks for the alternate image.  The first thing I did was to check the file sizes and such.  All checked out fine.  I also figured that IF my cd burn was bad, then making the image from the mounted iso file would determine that, but it produced the same results.

I will try the new boot disk from the site.  Thanks.  Maybe its just my lab ;-)

I am trying to install this on a K6-2 machine, but I have tried the boot disk on a P2-450 and a P166MMX, with no luck.  I will keep you posted.  Thanks for the help.
