Is the 7.2 installation running?  If so, I'd think the best, safest, and supported route would be to upgrade it to 8.1 in place, and back that up using the backup option from the console to an attached USB drive.  Then install 9.0--if you really want to be on the safe side, install it to a new drive, so if something goes wrong, you can easily revert to your old installation.  When you boot 9.0, one of the first things it will ask is whether you want to restore from a backup.  Answer yes.  This should do it, though I have no idea what you mean with the reference to a "Windows machine" in your post.

This will restore all your system configuration settings, your users, their data, your ibays, etc.  It will not restore any contribs or non-standard software you may have had installed.

You should upgrade the sme7.2 server to sme 7.6 first, as there were many changes between those versions, & being at v7.6 will allow a smoother & more successful backup & restore to newer versions.
You should be able to download a sme7.6 iso & create a boot CD if you search the mirror archives.

This was the advice some years ago when these versions were current.

Then you can perform a CD upgrade to sme8.1 & then do a backup & restore to sme9.

Make sure you remove (or move) any custom templates before doing the upgrade, as they are likely to clash with newer versions of the OS.

Thank you Janet.

I am on 7.6 currently. From here can you tell me how to restore on 8.1 or 9.0 directly. I manually made backup of files to HDD via USB . Now to transfer data from HDD to SME 8.1 or 9, how do we do it?

Sorry for such questions. Newbie here :-(

Thank you

To upgrade to SME 8.1, just burn an ISO of 8.1, boot from it, and upgrade your system in place.  You can't do that for 9.0, though, due to changes made in the upstream software.  To upgrade to 9.0, you need to back up your system using one of the above two methods, install, then restore.

Although I generally prefer the second method of backup, the first one is probably better in your case.  When you go through the set up of the new installation, one of the first questions it asks is whether you want to restore from backup.  If you've done the backup to USB device (the first link above), you can answer yes, and it will restore all your data and settings.  If you use any of the backup options through the server-manager, you'll need to configure the new installation to the point where you can use the server-manager, then configure the backup to match your previous settings, then restore it.
