Seeing my esmith webserver from afar

Hi

I wondered if you could offer any advice on where I might find help
in setting up an esmith server.

The software is installed and is one of 3 machines plugged into a hub
which connects to a cisco 677 router/modem with an ADSL connection.

The routers/modem ip address is 192.168.1.1, the other machines have
addresses 192.168.1.7 and 8.

Previously a windows server was on the network using the address
192.168.1.2 and this could be seen from the internet.

However despite setting up the esmith with 192.168.1.2 addy and it
claiming to be able to see the internet (option 4 in console "test
internet connection), it can not be seen from outside our network - checked
using pcanywhere to machine on diff ISP.

So this means that somewhere in the settings something is wrong i
guess.....

Any advice would be welcome...

Pete

Pete,

Can you ping the IP address of the modem?

if so

run "https://www.yourdomain.xxx.xx/server-manager"

user name "admin" and password as entered in setup.

go into remote access and enter appropriate information.

get a SSL program, I use Putty or Teraterm Pro both free and try again should work.

You can also create a small web page which should be visible to the outside world.

Hope this helps

The SME is on a private network behind a router. To access it from the internet, you need to forward the appropriate ports from the router to the SME. This should be done already if you had a server in the same position before that worked... Maybe it's forwarding by MAC rather than IP, so giving the SME the same IP isn't actually putting it in the same position as the Windows server was?

What exactly did you have visible to the internet from the Windows server before? And that same thing isn't working on the SME now?

I can ping the modem, and I can access server manager locally but not externally.

Not sure what SSL is?  I have put some web pages on the machine locally but they should be visible remotely too - if only I could see remotely....

But cheers for the idea, I will carry on :-)

Previously using a sambar server on the windows install a basic html web site was hosted.  Nothing fancy, but web pages put on the machine were visible from the outside and infact a domain name was/is pointed at that address and that worked too.

What im wondering is whether I should be giving the e-smith box the external ip address and also whether i should be selecting webserver and gateway or just server-only.

Will setting the e-smith box as server and gateway interfere with the cisco 677 modem doing its job.....

Cheers Bill for your thoughts and anyone elses thoughts welcome too.

Make sure you set server and gateway, are you using 2 nics?

Have you set up the static ip number of the router then after that option will ask you to asign DHCP to the network users this is in the main setup on Alt F1 under configure this server

Check all ok by Alt F2 Loggin in as root and at the command line type ifconfig and check that both internal and external ip address are there

Hope this helps:-)

The pc I am using only has one network card in it, so this means that I must set up the machine as a server-only I believe....

When doing this I give the e-smith machine ip address 192.168.1.2 subnet mask 255.255.255.0

I select the gateway ip address as 192.168.1.1 which is the cisco677 modem/router.

I leave DHCP off as i believe that the router/modem does this job.

I don't specify a DNS server or a proxyserver.
