Reserve ip to MAC address?
« on: August 31, 2002, 04:02:00 PM »
Hey all.
I am running SME Server 5.5 on a P120, and using it just for the firewall and gateway on my LAN. It is set up as a DHCP server, and I want to have some static IP's assigned to my two servers. How can I assign/reserve IP's to the MAC addresses of these servers?
I am a linux/unix newbie, so if there is any command line stuff necessary, please make it clear for me.

Thanks
Mikie.

Hi,

The easiest would be to disable the DHCP client on the 2 servers with static addresses and give them an IP outside the DHCP scope.

Hi RequestedDeletion.

I've tried this, and it does work, but because I have no DNS running outside the scope to resolve the IP's, I cannot connect to the internet, hence the need for reserving an IP to a MAC address within the DHCP scope/range.
Thanks for the input though,
Mikie.

As RequestedDeletion said, give them a static IP. Make sure you set their DNS, WINS and gateway to the E-Smith box's IP address.

Additionaly, if you need these boxes to be seen by the outside, you will have to set them up as Duncan pointed out.

Duncan suggested the best way to do this.

No, Duncan's suggestion had nothing to do with being seen by the outside.

I don't know what I did.... maybe got wild with the ole wheel mouse.

I somehow wound up up a bit on configure host names.

Sorry about that...
