Hi
I tried almost every suggestion on how to install a modem from this forum.
None of them worked so for on any of the four modems I tried.

modem list: ActionTec PM560LKI, Aopen FM56-PM, US Robotics 56K gamer modem(3Com chip set), ESS 2838; all of these are pci modems.
All function under RedHat 7.x or Mandrake 7.2 and 8.x.

I just can not for the life of me get any of these to install onto the SME5.5 server and gateway that is up and running.
I even tried fresh installs to see if any of them would take.

The one modem I wish to use is ActionTel PM560LKI.
This is the newest one.

At this point in time I'm more and willing to install any other modem form the above list.

Thank you for your time, and consideration.

I recommend an extermal modem on com1/ttyS0 only.  Internal modems are just too problematic.  If you have a problem with an internal modem you are forced into a server reboot.  If you have a problem with an external modem you simply reboot the modem.

You'll find installation of an external modem on com1 is much simpler and easier to deal with.

I agree with Darrell. We use modems all the time, but only external
