migrate from physical server to hyperV
« on: September 11, 2017, 04:48:34 PM »
Hi,
I have an SME installed on a physical server.
I would like to virtualize it on HyperV.
I wanted to do a USB backup to restore the full server (and update the version 8-> 9) in the same time) but I think HyperV does not handle USB.  8-)
Do you have any tips to migrate ?

Thank you for your help !

https://wiki.contribs.org/Backup_server_config

create backup from console then copy it on the new machine

or use Affa

ok so i need to :
1/ do a fresh install on hyperV.
2/ do an usb backup from console from the physical server.
3/ transfer the smeserver.tgz to the fresh install with ssh.
4/ follow this : https://wiki.contribs.org/Backup_server_config#Command_line_manual_Restore_from_USB_drive_or_memory_stick to restore the data + configuration.
5/ shut down the physical server

I'll try in few weeks and send you the feed back.

Thank you !

Btw... why HyperV? ESXi is (IMO) a good choice...

Because there is already a HyperV and not ESXi.

or use Affa
yes:
1) Install a fresh sme9 as a VM and the affa contrib
2) make a backup of the physical SME on the VM
3) use "affa --rise the_backup" on the VM and take in consideration the upgrade SME8 -> SME9 (for the repos for e.g. -- information is available on the forum about the migration)
