Installed Versions
« on: May 28, 2024, 08:30:52 AM »
I'm just curious about how many have upgraded to V10 / V10.1 and how many are still on earlier versions. I recall seeing a graph showing the installed numbers a few years ago but I can't find it any more. I've been working towards V10.1 (it's a long story... hardware etc) but I'm still on V9.2 and now V11 is imminent so I'll probably wait for V11.

There are some stats but I forget where.

It doesn't really matter how many.

The advice is the same. You are way out of date. Upgrade. Now. V10 has been out quite a while. Anyone on v9 is living dangerously.

There will be no direct path from v9 to v11 (because of RedHat policy) so get on with it.

Being on v9 will make it much harder to get to v10 once RHEL 7 goes EOL (soon), and you will need to do that before getting to v11.

So now is the time to move and save yourself a world of pain.

Well I bit the bullet over the weekend but I'm using a Lenovo ThinkCentre M93p which has only one Ethernet port. So I bought a USB3 Gigabit Ethernet LAN Adapter Realtek RTL8153 NIC. It says it supports linux with kernel 3.0. The OS see it, but I cant get it to work for either the local network or the internet connection. this is a home setup where I host my personal email server on a static IP address. Have I snookered myself?

A sensible idea and a great start :-)

Which goes rapidly down hill  Always risky when you run essentially a desktop machine.

Note - you can buy second-hand stuff like HP ProLiant MicroServer (might need a CPU upgrade on a Gen 8 - Terry knows), Dell, and SuperMicro (eg 721TQ-350B2) pretty cheap on EvilBay and various IT recycling shops. Or build your own with a Mini/Micro ATX board.

Probably ;-)

You know the old army phrase....l

"Prior Preparation and Planning Prevents P*ss Poor Performance"  ;-) Sorry - couldn't resist!

I think there are some here that use a USB NIC but IMHO it is flaky as hell and no substitute for a proper NIC. However, you can likely get it working.

What driver module is it using?

We need to see some logs of the driver when the system loads it and see what it is doing.

Also show

ip link

Firstly, thanks for the insults. :P

As far as using desktops is concerned I have run SME Server on desktop PCs since the Mitel days without any issues.

I ran the ThinkCentre up as server only using only the USB-Ethernet port and I can ping both ways with my laptop.
ip link shows UP and the configured static IP address. So it should be usable. I'll soldier on..

one hard reality of upgrade, is even Red Hat ends support of very old hardware, or not mainstream industrial hardware not that old.

Also it could be the driver is available elsewhere (eg elrepo) and a poor substitute is available in kernel.

what is the model of your usb ethernet?

Sorry :-)

Just giving best advice.

I did for a long time too, and then realised the folly of my ways.

There is so much decent secondhand server hardware out there that it makes sense. And it is usually much faster, more reliable, and better supported, unlike a desktop.

Note that most of us doing the dev work here also run Proxmox on our servers, and our SMEs are all virtualised. Just so much easier!!

If you have say gigabit fibre you'll also run into a lot of limitations as many of us have discovered!!

As JP said, you'll find that old stuff will break, and can't be replaced, and then it forces you to upgrade. We're not exactly cutting edge here :-)
