You don't say what you have tried with M$ Outlook express to try to read your mail, so it is a little hard to give you exact advice. You also don't say exactly which version of 4.0 beta you are using.
You should be able to read your mail by setting the POP server setting of Outlook to the LAN IP address of your e-smith server. You then need to use a correct username and password as set up on your server. If that does not work, then you will need to tell us exactly what you see on the screen for us to attempt to diagnose the problem.
You should also log into the server and look in the file /var/log/messages. Log in using Alt-F3 to get a login prompt, username "root" and your admin password. Use "less /var/log/messages" to look at the file. "G" to go to the bottom of the file, then "b" to page backwards. "q" to quit from "less". See if you can find any messagess containing a clue.
