Switch from Win2k server to SME - help!
« on: October 09, 2002, 01:15:10 PM »
To sum it all, anyone with knowledge of Win2k knows if you join another domain a new user profile is created. I can successfully join my Win2k machine to a SME domain no probs, but how do I keep my original user profile? The problem is the same with XP.
Original profile is stored as domain.username but even after joing an SME which has the same domain name a new profile is created as domain.01.username which is obviously a blank one.
Roaming profiles won't work as to join a Win2k box to SME you first have to revert from your 2k domain to a workgroup before joining the new SME domain so you can't use your original roaming profile as you weren't using it at the time of joining - you were using the Workgroup profile.......phew!

Anyone with a solution? Please!

Are these links useful. I used Google.com and searched " copying user profiles"

Good Luck

Thanks Bill but that won't do the trick. Copying the profile is the easy bit, actually getting it to stick is the problem - oh well back the grindstone, being trying for days now!

Check the permissions on the copied profile

Or - maybe this - Disconnect your network connection B4 shutting down your PC (while working on the old domain) save your profile locally when asked. join the new SME domain with the same username and password as the W2K client / profile and your profile will be established as the default on the new SME domain.

Try this...
Log into the original domain to get the roaming profile stored on the desktop. Log off and back on as local admin and give permission to the profile folder to everyone. Log off again and log on as the user on the SME domain. Now copy all files from the original profile to the new SME profile. I'm not sure if ntuser.dat should be copied, but all other files should be ok. After logging off, the file should be saved tot he SME roaming profile.

I know that this is time consuming, but it's the 'dirty way' to do it. If you want to do multiple users, you may want to give permission on the SME server for the Win2K server and admin in oder to copy files directly to the folders. After you create the users default profiles on the SME server, you should be able to directly copy the files to the appropriate folders on the server as admin, remeber to reset permissions though.

I hope this helps, and I hope that I didn't confuse you too badly. It's all because of permissions and SIDs.

Try using the files and settings transfer wizard which comes with Windows XP - I have succesfully used this to copy profiles on Win2K boxes.
