qmail and MS attachaments
« on: October 16, 2002, 10:08:50 AM »
Hi
Qmail will not receive any e-mail with a Microsoft Office (MS) attachment. i.e. excel spreadsheets or word.doc attachments.
Is there a setting in Qmail that I missed for it to accept these e-mails with these types of attachments.

Server Build is 5.5 with the update2 pkg.
Qmail running in Standard mode.
mx records are correct.
rcpthosts file is correct.
No mail filters.
No Virus scanner on server.

All clients on the mail server can send MS attachments via e-mail (any type) within the network and externally.
They can also receive txt attachments via e-mail without any problem.

I'm getting quite a few complaints from my clients and the companies’ customers that they are receiving Relay Denied from their ISP's.

All clients on the mail server can send and receive internally and externally all plain e-mails from any one. But no MS attachments???

Thank you for your time and consideration in posting your comments in advance.

Are you sure it's not the email client? The latest version of Outlook Express has a built-in filter that blocks some "dangerous" filetypes... That's the only thing I can think of off the top of my head...

We are running 5.1.2 and have noticeed a problem with internal Outlook users sending stuff and only a winmail.dat file comes across but not the actual file.  1 person sent an outlook Notes files with the qmail error being that the server doesn't supports embedded files (not sure if it was IMP reporting the error or what), and the other claims she sent the file as a regular attachment.  I use Outlook Express and everything works great inside and out.  Yes a particular problems is outlook express blocking certain files but they can be manually opened.  Unsure if John is having the same problem we are.

As for your relaying denied....I don't know much about 5.5 but on 5.1.2 smtp is blocked from the outside and yes many ISP's do block smtp to any server other than their own.

My ISP is holding my secondary mx records.
We do have a static IP address.
If the outside clients sends an e-mail with no attachaments the internal clients receivs it.  However, if the same outside client sends an e-mail with a MS attachament the internal client does not receive it.
The outside client, in time, will receive an error from it's own ISP 'Relay Denied'.
Even if the outside client sent a plain e-mail first and than sent an e-mail with the MS attachaments right after it. They still, in time, get the 'Relay Denied'.
I've seen the message source for these errors. The e-mails with MS attachaments never makes the SME box, let alone the secondary server.
The mail just seems to set in their ISP que for a few days and than sends the error message.
Thanks John
Here is the error message:

All test so that this server was up and running and functioning as it should be at the time of this error message.
All e-mail utilities indicate that qmail is running fine.
Does any one have another e-mail utility that will also check e-mail attachments??

Thank you in advance for your postings.

John - your error message shows that the ISP is queuing the mail for 4 days before returning it undeliverd. You say that your logs show that it never arrived at your server.

Sounds like a problem at the ISP.

Have their helpdesk mail you and then reply to it and then have them mail an attachment to you. That should prove to them that the problem is theirs.

By the way..  .. Your mail servers ext NIC is the external gateway??
