Backup issues....
« on: October 16, 2002, 05:28:34 PM »
Greetings....

I have SME 5.5 Update 2 freshly installed on a Compaq ML350. It was got on the cheap so didn't have an external SCSI connector to hook up my DLT drive. I stuck in an Adaptec 2940UW and have connected my HP Surestore DLT 80 to it. Everything works - I can do a backup and can restore files from it..... It's just very slow. As the backup is running it reports that it is backing up at about 560kb/s.

I have not customised anything to do with the backup at all, so it uses dump and whatever the default settings are for it. Have I just used a bad combination of controller and drive or is there some tweaks that need to be made to get this going going as it should be?  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

Much obliged,

Alan Smith.

Well - managed to answer my own question. After some serious Google'ing I found some docs about DLT backups and some of them referred to blocksize and how DLT's worked best with blocksizes of 64k or greater.

I hadn't played around with backups much before so didn't know much about it. Anyway customised the flexbackup.conf file to use a blocksize of 64k (couldn't set it higher - gave errors) and am knowing backing up at about 3mb/s . Are there any other tweaks I should try out or does this seem to be about the best I'll get out of it ????

TIA,

Alan Smith.
