I used mkcdrec http://mkcdrec.ota.be/project/index.html
It can makes a bootable disaster recovery image ISO file, multi-volume CD-R or CD-RW. and restore to blank hard disk.

Isnt that bad? This means that mkcdrec doesnt actually back anything up, just take snapshots of the partition

. Am I wrong?

What would be nice is a program like this, but makes bootable CD's of the actuall system, so that basically I could take those CD's, bung them into a brand new computer with no partitions (clean) and run it and have them put the system back on and have it running as it was.

Is there anything out there like this, except for norton ghost that is, anything especially made for *nix environments?

I just bought a Fully functional 25/50Gig Onstream tape drive on Ebay for $85.00. And there are lot's of them onsale there. I was also looking for a CDrom backup solution but 640MB or 50Gigs compressed data storage. It was a no brainer.

is any different using of Onstream tape drive and HP tape drive..
HP tape is too.....$$$$$$!!

Onstream has it's own media for storage and the company is solid and has been around for a while. I even ordered the media pretty cheap off of Ebay 3 25/50 Gig tapes for $100.00 brand new. They usually cost around $50 each if you buy retail.
