Topic: which user to use (linux newbie)

Hi,
Just wondering if someone could explain which user should I use when installing rpms or tar files etc and general setup install of apps.  I've been only using root but not sure if this is the right thing to be doing.

That's fine. Regular users can't login to the SME console (without changes), so you can basically only use root or admin (the configuration screen).

I tried using a normal user and had no luck so I figured it was fine using root

http://www.dungog.net/sme/howto/usershell.php will add a panel to Server Manager to allow you to give individual users shell access.
