Topic: Ghosting From An 8G To A 20G

I just needed to know if there are ANY issues with Ghosting my SME Server from the 8G and then restoring the image back to a new 20G.

I have had NO problems ghosting/restoring 'normal' Red Hat machnies - but I consider SME to be my 'Special (K) Child'.

Can I do the Ghost and will SME see the 12G additional space and allocate it for use?

I thought it depends on how you ghost the image, if you ghost the partition then the restore will only ever be as big as the original partition, because you are copying that, but if you ghost the info and create the partitons then restore the info it should work, shouldn't it?! But then again, I'm just a noob at this so dont go taking my word for it

I recently went from 30gb to 100gb, using the Norton Ghost 2002 that came with my copy of Norton System Works 2002.  I installed Norton Ghost to my Win2K workstation, and used that to create the Ghost bootdisk.  I put the 100gb drive as secondary master on my server, booted from the boot disk, and told Ghost to copy the entire disk.  I did NOT accept the values Ghost suggested for partition sizes; I adjusted /boot & swap back to their sizes on the 30 gb drive, but allowed / to grow to fill the rest of the 100 gb drive.  Ghost went to work, finished w/no errors.  I disconnected both drives, reconnected the 100 gb as primary master, booted.  It booted perfectly and has run perfectly for >1 month now.

Did this work with a partition type of RAID, or did you use a single drive?  If so, Ghost appears to be the easiest way to upgrade a RAID drive.

I used the partition magic recover/restore floppy disks and it copied without any problems.  The final step was to increase the partition size to fill the rest of the disk.  As long as the program makes an exact duplicate of each partition, you will be fine.

Just single Drives - I don't run anything big enough to justify using RAID on anything. This is just a lil' 'ol Home Network.

Well, I went ahead and did it and the only thing that seemed to mess up somewhere was the fact I started getting all KINDS of IMAP errors from Outlook XP when I was accessing my accounts on the SME Box. I know that OutlookXP doesn't have the best reputation in the world but it didn't happen BEFORE I upgraded the drive.

All I did though was to move all the existing mail to my archive folder(s), delete the user accounts on the SME box and then recreate them - no errors since.
