Couple of Dumb Questions Regarding The Firewall...
« on: November 09, 2002, 07:02:01 PM »
1) PLEASE tell me that SME 5.5 blocks ports 137-139 straight out of the box. I'm sure that it does - but just want reassurance. :) I have a client that I do work for on the side that's been running a straight Win2K Server/Gateway and they've been hit DOZENS of times by the M$ Messenger issue.

2) Are there logs available of exactley WHAT the firewall blocks/is blocking while it's up? They just, basically, want proof that the machine was a worthwhile acquisition.

Thanks! :)

The firewall blocks everything inbound, as far as computers on the LAN are concerned.  That is, nothing that comes in to the server gets sent to any of the LAN machines, unless you've done some messing around with port forwarding.

Dunno about logs--I know that in some earlier versions, the packet filter logged everything, but I'm not sure about now.

Jim and Dan, take a look at this in regards to what packets the firewall is blocking:
