clamav and test virus eicar problem
« on: November 11, 2002, 05:48:11 AM »
Hi all,

I am trying to use eicar to test clamav to see if it is working, however, when I use outlook or outlook express, it tells me access is denied to the file eicar.com. If I rename the file, then I can attach it. Using IMP and webmail, it tells me there was a problem uploading the file ( I presume for the same reason that I cannot upload in O oe OE.) So anyone know how else I can test it?

I disabled my pc's antivirus software for the test, so no problem there, is it the com extension? I never heard of OE blocking that. I cannot send it inside from yahoo or something since I dont have DDNS yet on this test server. I am testing for an actual production server.

Any help would be appreciated

Hi Marco,
E-Mail me permission, and I'll gladly send you an attached copy of the eicar test virus.

That won't work. I dont have a way for anyone to send me email, this is on an internal network that has IP only, I plan to try DDNS when time allows. all I can do is send locally.

You could copy the eicar test virus onto the server via smb/ssh and then use pine to send the message to yourself.

I realize this is late, but hopefully you have email notification on and get this.

OE6 will block "dangerous" file types. Tools -> Options -> Security -> "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus."

It would be a huge help in a massively infested system, but it sure throws out a lot of babies with the bath water...
