Boot problems
« on: November 13, 2002, 12:58:31 PM »
Hello,

I have e-smith on CD and am trying to install it over my current Windows 98 installation. However, I have tried booting from the CD but it doesn't ... I've also tried creating a boot disk using rawrite but I get an error saying "General failure reading drive D" when I press enter having told the program where the img file is.

I can look through the cd and open all other files, so it seems to be working fine. But, I have tried copying the .img files from D:\images\ to my C drive but I get "Cannot copy boot: Cannot read from the source file or disk" error messages. I have even tried opening the img files in notepad, but surprisingly enough I get another error ... "An unexpected error occured while reading D:\images\boot.img". The img files must have something in them, they are all between 144 KB and 1440 KB.

So, the CD seems to be working apart from the img files. Could these have become corrupted? Is there any way to fix this? Also, I'm on an ISDN line and don't fancy downloading it again myself - it will take hours!

I would appreciate any ideas you may have.

Chris

contact me directly and I'll post you a cd out as it appears you are in the UK as well. Before we do that you have tried checking bios settings for boot device order etc?

Check your boot order and make sure the cdrom is first on the list.

When you use rawrite run it in dos on your windows system and it will tell you to put a floppy in then it does it automatically for you then you boot of the floppy. It is only the boot, img file that you want

Hi All,

I met same problem as Chris'. I couldn't boot from CD rom using my existing e-smith CD. I did check bios setting and ensured the CD-ROM was the first boot device...Any idea or can I create a boot floppy disk and how?

I will greatly appreciate any help from you.

Chris, did you get your problem solved?

Thanks in advanced.

Hi John,

Yes, I got sorted. I'm amazed how easy E-Smith as been to install and run so far. You've got it all to come.

I gave up trying to get my existing CD to boot up and Bob sent me a CD by post - how kind!

Have you read http://www.e-smith.org/docs/howto/Boot_floppy_howto.php3 - this showed me how to make a boot floppy, it didn't work though :(

Good luck!

Chris, have you tried doing the same things with the new CD? It sounds like the new one worked for you...  If so, it may have just been a bad CD...

Hi Chris,

It sounds you were so exciting when you got your new e-mail server set up. Could you let me know Bob's e-mail? If he can make a copy of this CD and send it to me, it will be great.

Thanks in advance!
