Can anyone tell me if SME server can be a Name server, if so how can it be done.

or  is the only way it can host a dmain and virtual domains is by redirection.

AFAIK

SME acts as Nameserver for its Domain and his virt. Domains, if you don't setup
SME to use a other Domainserver.
It is acting as Cache / forwarder for all others.
