DNS Configuration
« on: November 19, 2002, 02:31:52 PM »
Hello all, i'm totaly new in SME. But i do have following questions.
1. The Server is up and running as an server only.
2. I did the configuration ( hopefully correct ), but if i connect to the webbased configuration tool and i review the connfiguration, then i see that in the DNS entry is still the local ip address showed up. Why does this happen?
3. Because of this problem there is no connection possibel from the Internet side of cours.
4. The SME Server is behind an firewall and it looks like this ( just an example )
- The Test connection from the SME console is ok. It does connect to the Internet.

The Router ( Zyxel Prestige ADSL ) does have an fixed ip address=  x.x.x.x
The SUA Configuration is done. Http 80 and ftp 21.
The Fixed ip address will be Translated with NAT to an internal address range.

The Checkpoint firewall is configured as well and it does pass port 80 etc. I even activated the DMZ.
Many thanks in advanced for your help and sorry for my english grammer.

I don't think this is the Problem. Anyway you can setup a other DNS for your
net, if you logon as "admin" physically to your SME server or remote with a
ssh client. Somewhere in the configuration screens it asks if you would like
to use a external DNS or if SME should resolve the addresses.

What Version of Checkpoint are you using ?? Did you try to connect a client
to your external FW nic to check if the FW has ports 80 / 21 open in both
directions ?? With Checkpoint FW-1 Ver 4.x we had to open "tcp-highports"
also to make our http-server visible and functioning for the outernet.

If FW tests work try connecting from internet and check logs.

FW if it is receiving a request via the router for the webserver
FW if it gets an answer to the above req from your webserver
Router if it gets this from FW

Hello Jochem,
thanks for your answer,  but i possible found the reason why it does not work. The SME boot procedure is based on Templates. Every time that i boot the Server i does overwrite my configuration. Like i was writing before I do have differences between the Server Console and the webbased tool. On the Console it shows the DNS entry correct, but in the webbased tool review it shows allways the local ip address in  the DNS entry.
So where can I change the settings in the Templates for the DNS ( Primery and Secondary DNS )?
Or how can I make that the entrys are the same ( SME console and Webtool Client )?
