How do I host DNS / MX from Linux?
« on: December 03, 2002, 04:35:21 PM »
Hello all,

The one Internet concept that's been eluding me is "dns hosting", and the hosting of MX records.

My ISP uses Linux boxes to do it, so I'm wondering if I can do it with an SME box.
...or any other Linux box, if SME can't or won't.

Do any of you know some pointers for setting this up, or links to some good documentation for DNS hosting?

Many thanks,

-Jerry

Update- I just found BIND for linux, and apparently this does the job.  Anybody tried it?

You really should take a look at the contributed HOWTOs, as this has been covered there.  I think it's for an older version, but it'd get you started.

Or not. We discourage the use of 'bind' for a publicly accessible DNS server, and we strongly discourage the setup of DNS by anyone who doesn't know exactly what they are doing. There's too much which can go wrong, and there are good and easy alternatives available.

Not really pertaining to your topic, Jerry, but a good DNS alternative is easyDNS (www.easydns.com).

They're cheap, easy as all get out, and you have ful control over every aspect of your DNS and MX records through an easy webform.

I use them, and love them.
