Topic: A Simple question about the Primary Domain Name

I should have been able to find the answer in the forum. But 30 minutes of searches for Primary Domain Name found no clues to my questions. Lots of domain and DNS questions and answers though.

My question is what do I put for Primary Domain Name during configuration if I don't have one? Will anything do? What if I put something that already exists like DOMAIN.COM?

Right now I use DYNDNS to redirect traffic to my IP and forward the data (via my router) to my e-smith box. Since I am thinking about making the e-smith box the gateway I thought that there might be some consequences I am not aware of with regard to domain names.

If I understook you correctly (English isn´t my first lang!) you should to use your dyndns name. Something like jader.dyndns.org if it was mine!

I specifically do not *want* a "real" domain as my primary domain -- that is, I'd like something like mydomain.local.

So, for local clients, the server will resolve all addresses *.mydomain.local. If I want an external address, I can add virtual domains, be they dyndns or otherwise.

I currently have my SME server configured like this, and have the clients using it as their DNS server, but it won't resolve any mydomain.local addresses.

Make sure the dhcp server is running. So it will assign the ip addresses.
Then make sure that all of the clients are set up to recieve ip automatically,
and if they are windows machines be sure to set the wins configure tab
to automatically configure wins using dhcp. Also, be sure your sme
server is set to be the local domain controller. This is how I have mine
set up and I can point my browser to anydomain.com that is hosted
on my sme server and it will validate.

You may have to play around with it a little to make sure it works properly,
but once it is configured right. It will definetly allow your clients to access
the websites on the server using the domain.com as opposed to the
ip address. This is expecially handy when your using the email server
as you can set the email server settings to mail.yourdomain.com as
opposed to an IP address.

I have my lan hooked up to a router which reminds me. You must disable
the dhcp server on your router for this to work. If you have both the router
and the sme server set to provide dhcp services, it will kill your lan. Not
permanately mind you, just untill you shut one of the dhcp servers down.
