Topic: Problem with upgrading blade

I am using SME Server v5.5 on a Toshiba Magnia SG10.  I am having problems with the two blade updates.  The updates install fine but when I reboot,  I cannot get an I/P address from my ISP (Cox.net).  I see the following on the messages log:

I have tried this three times already.  The first time was a blade 1 update, the second time was both blades, and the thid time was a blade 2 only.  Nothing worked.  

However, when I put my D-Link router between the cable modem and the SG10, the server gets an I/P address from the router just fine.  Anybody help please?  Thanks.

Was your D-Link router there before your attempted to connect the SG10 directly to the cable modem ?

If so, do you know if your ISP locks onto your last used MAC address ? If they do, then you will have to clone the MAC address of the DLink router on your SG10 or call your ISP to release the MAC address.

No.  It was actually running for several weeks already and I decided to upgrade it.  After the upgrade, I could not get back on.  Then I tried putting the D-Link in between and the server was able to get an I/P address off the D-Link router.  

I tried this three times and I got the same results each time.  

Regarding the MAC address, I think it is the cable modem that "remembers" it.  All I needed to do was to unplug everything for several minutes or to reset the cable modem and it would recognize the new MAC address already.

With Telstra BigPond Cable in Australia, the modem is just a modem, the router at Telstra is the one that remembers the MAC address, hence the problem and need to clone MAC addresses at times.

The only suggestion I can make is to run the configuration screen again and hope that it will redo the configuration files (you might have to first change it to something else like dialup and then back again so that SME will actually do something) and that this will fix the problem after the reboot.

I tried that but it still would not get an I/P addrress.  BTW, I realized that it was not the upgrade that caused the error (although it happened after every upgrade procedd I did).  

I decided to re-configure my e-smith  after reading a post here about how to clear existing (internal) dhcp leases from the system.  When it rebooted, I could not  get an I/P from my ISP anymore!  It showed the same problem.  

I do not understand how dhcp works (both for e-smith and for general dhcp) but from the messages log that I'm seeing, it appear as if e-smith is trying to "force" my ISP's dhcp server to assign the same I/P address.  I have dynamic DNS.  This probably explains why it works when I have my Dlink  router setup between my ISP and e-smith.
