VPN Woes
« on: December 14, 2002, 08:25:33 AM »
I have been trying to get VPN to work properly on my SME 5.6b7 box. I seem to be able to connect internelly and have had others connect external to my intranet but this is where the problem begins. I have PPTP set to 2 in the server manager. Even if the client's WXP box has the same work group name, after connection I cannot see thier machine, and he can't see mine, in the My Network Places of wxp. Am I missing something. Can someone give a step by step vpn setup guide or at least some guidance? I am also using an SMC 7004vbr router and have fowarded port 1723 to the server ip to allow PPTP to get through.

I don't know much about the SMC 7004vbr and what it blocks or not.

Here is what I would do:
Connect externally to the inside (have your friend do this if possible).
Have him use the same name and password you are using.
Ask him to see if he can browse your pc by IP ADDRESS: \192.168.1.xxx or whatever your ip address is and see if he sees your shares:

If he does, then try it using the name of your pc: \mypc
and see if he can see your shares:

If not you have a name resolution problem and I would start looking at DNS or WINS(if enabled). Look at the ip settings and see if they have anything to tell you. At worst, at least for now you can connect by IP until you figure it out.
