Update System Panel
« on: January 04, 2003, 10:34:03 AM »
I am new to SME. I just installed 5.5 and everything is working. Well at least my Internet connection is....:-)

I have a few questions. I've been using ClarkConnect for about 8 months
( www.clarkconnect.org ) and I really like using it but I thought I'd check out SME. When I got to grc.com with ClarkConnect it shows me as stealth. I can turn on or off services via my Windows browser. How When I visit grc.com with SME 5.5 it shows a few ports opened. How can I turn those ports off?

How do I install the Update System Panel so that I can install RPMs?  I would like to have the ability to forward some ports from my SME box to my Windows XP box.

Where can I find information about SME's firewall protection?

I been reading the web site and I see SME 5.5 is up to Update 6. After I installed SME 5.5 I upgraded to Update 2. How do I get up to Update 6?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Palani - see http://myezserver.com/downloads/mitel/contrib/update-system/devinfo-mitel-update-system-0.0.1-12.noarch.rpm for update system rpm.
I find the most convenient way to interact with the server is to putty from a windows machine and use a combination of command line and mc for editing and moving files. Log in as root.
Copy the above rpm to somewhere on the server and from a command line type rpm -ivh devinfo-mitel-update-system*.
Now you can install other rpms from your browser.
You can also issue wget http://myezserver.com/downloads/mitel/contrib/update-system/devinfo-mitel-update-system-0.0.1-12.noarch.rpm from a command line which downloads the file directly to the server.
Grab servermanager-navigation from the same site and install this. This will allow you to customize what you see in the server manager panel on your browser. Then you can add all the goodies from myezserver and other d/l sites to allow you to scan your ports, close outgoing ports, portforward, turn off services etc.
Don't be too concerned about the default ports that are open - the server is quite secure - read the security white paper at http://www.e-smith.org/docs/papers/smeserver-security.html.
There is lots of info in the user guide and faq and searching these forums answers most questions.
5.5 upgrade2 is the latest. Version 5.6 is a major rewrite and a bit new yet :)
Good luck
