SME and WinXP Part 2
« on: January 07, 2003, 03:21:47 PM »
I'm not sure if I'm allowed make a new post regarding the same issue. But I figured with all the posting on this site, I didn't want mine to get buried  :-)

Anyway here are some things I tried:

1. My SME machine name is smeserver1
2. My Windows Workgroup in SME is smegroup
3. My WindowsXP computer name is MINE

A. I set SME as a Workgroup and Domain controller

B. Joined the XP box to the SMEBOX domain
(I think I did. Is doing steps 1 and 2 above, the way to do this? If not can you please explain?)

C. I am using the username palani and password on on both SME and XP
D I am running XP Pro and NOT XP Home

I have no idea how to apply the signorseal registry change to Windows XP. I know it has to do with the registry. What do I type? And where do I put it?

When I click on the Map Drive icon in My Computer Windows Explorer etc. and then click Browse I am able to see Smegroup under Microsoft Windows Network. On my Windows machine I tried Start/Run and typed \smeserver1\palani and also \smeserver1\rpms but to no avail. I created rpms in i-bay

If you need more info, please let me know.

Thanks
Palani

No. You need to go through XP's "Change Network Settings" thing. It's in one of the tabs in System Properties. It will have a comment about changing your workgroup or domain settings. This is covered in the manual (though not specifically for XP). http://edocs.mitel.com/6000_SME_Server/smeserveruserguide/English/index.html

I've never used SME as a domain controller, but I think you'll need to specify that you're logging on to the SME's domain, not your local account. You do with an NT PDC, which the SME should be imitating.

You're seeing the server on the network, but you don't have permission to look at anything.

Two questions / suggestions:-

1. What happens when you double-click on the "Smegroup" under Microsoft Windows Network? What computers do you see?

2. Try Start/Run again. Or better still, go to the MSDos command prompt and type "net view \smeserver". What do you see?

Unless you really have a true Domain you should not setup you SME as a domain controller. Just stick with the P2P "workgroup" and keep it simple and you will not have these problems.

I agree with you Bob, but if you really want to see how to add and remove Windows 2000 and Windows XP computers to and from from an E-Smith domian, look at Darryl May's howto at :-

Laurence,
I have lost access to the files on my SME server from my windows 2000 pro machine. I can still access them from the W2K server, but my html editors are all on the W2k workstation. I can see the SME server in the network neighborhood, but I can't connect to it anymore. I tried
net view //SMEserver
and the following came up.
System error 53 has occurred.
The network path was not found.
Can you help?
Jan

The only time that has happened to me was when I set up an SME server in a peer-to-peer network (ie as a server in a windows workgroup). I changed the password on the Windows machine and forgot to change my password on the SME server. I got exactly the same error message as you.

Does that sound familiar?

I tried changing passwords on both machines (my Win2K machine and the SME server) and I cannot see the SME server at all on the network from my machine. I can access the server-manager via my browser and I can see and access files from my son's WinXPpro PC.
I am thinking of reinstalling Win2k. It's been acting funny lately anyway.
Thank you.
