SAMBA excel file locking problem
« on: January 07, 2003, 03:43:24 PM »
I have just migrated a client from an NT file server to a SME 5.5 file server.  All the client PC's run windows 98, and there are three sites connected via an IPCOP vpn.

All was going well until I had a compliant that a file that was amended on Friday did not have the changes when opened on Monday.

Further questioning revealed that another user had also amended the file on Friday, and there amendments were not seen on Monday.

A backup to desktop was also being performed on Friday.

Does anyone know what the problem might be?  Is it the locking parameter within Samba?

Thanks,

Chris

Hi Chris!

Did u create a group for that file users?
Did u create an i-bay for that file,
change the ownership of the i-bay to it's group; set the
appropriate "user access via file sharing" write=group, read=group?

Here in our office we use excel files a lot too, and we have one
file the are being used by  4 people simultaneously. What i do is
enable  the "workbook sharing" feature, "TOOLS" -> "Workbook
sharing" and  "Allow changes by more than one user at the same time".
And its also a good idea to enable "always create backup" in save
options so you have an automatic backup to use when things go wrong.
