SME & Clark Connect
« on: January 09, 2003, 11:51:19 AM »
I been using Clark Connect ( http://www.clarkconnect.org/ ) for about 6 months. It's a lot like SME. I really like the web interface and it has some nice features. A friend of mine told me about E-Smith just a few days ago and I been toying with it. I find that SME has a bit more features to it. And I still got a lot to learn. Anyhow, has anybody here used or tried Clark Connect? If so, what are your thoughts? Just curious here.

Thanks
Palani

i have used Clarkconnect in the past. I think clarkconnect is works great for your basic website/firewall. I've just started using E-smith and really like it. I think it has many more features than clarkconnect, and much more potential.
Just my thoughts on the subject.

I am about to shift over to Clark Connect 1.2 from SME 5.5.  I've found the templating system to be a bit too fiddly for my liking, though I can see the benefit of it.  I've noticed that the web interface is much nicer and faster than SME.  The printer configuration uses CUPS, which I got working in a relatively short time (never got the SME printer config working).  It has an intrusion detection page which is a nice addition.  And with the addition of webmin, I see myself using the command line a lot less.  Not to mention the 2.4 kernel and use of IP tables.  That said, SME has been a brilliant addition to this environment (serving 40 users e-mail and file sharing), replacing an NT server which caused many headaches in the past.  Time will tell which platform is superior.

If ClarkConnect had SME's features and vise versa, both of these would be excellent products. I will agree that ClarkConnect web interface is much faster. I don't have any printers on my server, therefor I can't comment on that feature. I wish SME's web interface was as nice looking as ClarkConnect. (I don't care for the frame idea) An instrusion detection page built-in SME would be nice. IP tables would be a plus. I really like using WebMin in ClarkConnect. I haven't done the templating system thingy in SME yet....:-)

FYI, SME Server 5.6 runs a 2.4 kernel, ext3 journalling filesystems, and uses iptables for the firewall. I would also point out that the web interface is undergoing constant improvement in all aspects.

Stay tuned.
