Dell PowerEdge & NIC
« on: January 10, 2003, 11:11:49 PM »
I cannot get SME 5.5 to recognize the Intel 10/100/1000 NIC on my new Dell PowerEdge server 600SC.
I selected the e1000 module during the configuration procedure but that did not work.
Can someone walk me through the procedure for getting the right module and installing it -- or point me in the right direction? Although I have been using e-smith server in an older machine, this is the first time it has not worked right out of the box.
  Thanks.

This topic has been covered fairly well in the experienced user forum. If you search, you will find it. If you still need explicit instructions, let me know as I only installed SME 5.5 on a Dell PowerEdge 600SC 3 days ago, and had to overcome the same problem

James, you are very kind.

I've read every message in every thread that mentions Dell within the past six months. I think the answer may be in the thread "SME5.6 / e1000 NIC" but, to be honest, I'm not technically proficient enough to follow that discussion.

Explicit instructions would be very much appreciated.

And, now that I have found someone who has just installed 5.5 on the 600SC, have you figured out how to make the machine boot by default to esmith-up? I ran the /sbin/lilo command that someone on the forum recommended, but that did not do the trick.

Thanks,

Don“t they have broadcom gigabit cards in the PowerEdge servers?

I tried the following:

/sbin/e-smity/db configuration set EthernetDriver1 e1000
/sbin/e-smith/signal-event console-save

but I get a message that says "incorrect module parameters" etc.

Is there something else I can try?

A search on Dell's site showed the 600SC comes default with an Intel Gigabit NIC, should be e1000.
http://www.dell.com/us/en/esg/topics/esg_pedge_sc_towermain_servers_3_pedge_600sc.htm

If you install SME5.6 on the server, it includes the drivers for this card, which will require the workaround.  If you have SME5.5, you will need to get them from another location.

I have seen posts regarding Darrell May's drivers at:

The file is buried down in:
