I've installed the apt rpm to the new SME V5.6 server. This provide a nice way to added development tools to your server. It should also be noted that this can be a dangerous tool. Upgrades over e-smith templates is a bad thing. I've installed ruby, gcc, and image tools for gallery. Apt is a good thing if you know what your doing.

I suggest you write one HowTo (IF you can/wish) telling us what is safe to let APT to update and how to do that.

apt is, I believe, the Debian software update utility, similar to, but different than RPM. It's supposed to be very smart at going out to get the updates needed.
