What do you all use Ldap for ?

Hi all,

I recently set up a directory service in my outlook to search the LDAP directory and it works fine.

I've also downloaded what seems like a great LDAP viewing/editing tool.

Now the big question, what to do now ???

I would like to know more about the scope of ldap and what I could be using it for, so any advice here would be appreciated.

Is the LDAP Directory created under e-smith separate to the users and simply created at the time of creating a user, or does it all tie together with the Users etc ? What I'm getting at is if I delete a user from the LDAP using the editing tool or make some sort of mistake, do I break something in e-smith ?

cheers,

Adam

Yes, it's a system-wide directory. I know that if configured properly, LDAP can be used for client authentication for some things... I added a few email addresses used company-wide to our list, and the changes later disappeared. I think the directory might get recreated when a new user is added. It might be some other event that triggers it, and there may be some way to add entries that aren't affected by changes on the server. All I know is that my changes eventually were removed...

Thanks Bill,

well that's a bummer :(

I was hoping to maybe utilise it a bit more.

I there a way to show a list of all users in the LDAP ? A list that I can put on our intranet for users to view ? I don't want to install any software on each client so a web browser would be perfect.

Outlook Express can access the list. Just set it up as a "Directory" account, and it'll check against users on the SME. However, OE doesn't let you just look at the whole directory. You can type "bo" and do Check Names to have it automatically bring up "Bob". Other mail clients like Netscape do let you see the whole directory...
