SME 5.6, SMTP AUTH, Mailfront

Hi,

I am thinking of moving away form NT4 with Exchange 5.5 and WinGate Pro towards a *nix based solution. One of the Things I am thinking of is SME 5.6.

A crucial item for me is that I want to have SMTP, POP3 and IMAP4 access to y Mailserver from everywhere on the Internet. On my Exchange 5.5 box I use SMTP AUTH for this.

After spending some time browsing / searching this and other forums and websites I understand that I can accomplish SMTP AUTH using the work from Damien on Pagefaul.org (http://www.pagefault.org/code/e-smith.shtml).
That looks promising, and I saw some posts here stating that all works well.

However, I am a little confused about the statements about mailfront. It seems to me that as from SME 5.5 this is standard in SME. Menaning that in SME 5.6 I won't have to do anything else than installing Damien's RPM's and of course changing the client settings.

Can anyone shed some light on this ? I want to move quickly to SME but don't have the time to spend days on configuring this. I need to be absolutely sure of the solution before I start installing SME so that the swithc to SME takes as little time as possible.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Best Regards,

Arvid

Yes, 5.5 switched to mailfront. Before that, most people used Nathan Fowler's pop-before-smtp for allowing external SMTP access (not truly secure, but not wide open either). It didn't work on 5.5, so people were pretty much SOL until Damien released his RPMs. That's the proper way of doing it, with actual user authentication over SSL.

Hi,

Thanks for this reply. As soon as my "new" (2nd hand) hardware comes in I will start exploring SME's capabilities !
