APIC error at start of install
« on: February 07, 2003, 10:48:06 PM »
I am attempting to install the e-smith server 5.6 on an HP Kayak with dual P2/300 CPUs. The system begins to boot from the CD, starts to load the kernel, but then throws the following error: APIC error on CPU0: 08(08) [* that is CPU zero *]  I have used this CD many times with no problem so I am sure that it is good and this machine has been running e-smith server 5.5 for many months.

My questions are: What is an APIC error? Why CPU0, when it is the original CPU? Is there a list of error codes somewhere that I missed? Lastly what can I do to overcome this? Thanks in advance.

Hello Joe...

I have exactly the same machine Hp kayak dual p2 300..

And running 5.5 for a long time with no problems.

When i tried to install 5.6 i got also the same apic error you got.

I found some information on the internet regarding this error, but can't remember
anymore where...

It said something about wrong apic tables....
And that it was a known error for the 2.4 kernel.

I have flashed the latest bios with no results ;(

So still running 5.5......

Good luck on the problem (lemme know if you come up with something)

I gave up on 5.6 and went back to 5.5, no more problems with the install. It goes on just as it always did. Guess the thing to do is to stay with 5.5 for the immediate future, or at least until I hear from the "bugs@" folks.
