SME 5.5 behind Cisco PIX Firewall
« on: February 13, 2003, 06:43:25 PM »
Hi All,

What are the port numbers in SME 5.5 pop download for the external mail client?

I have currently one SME 5.5 running in Server-Only operation mode which is behind the Cisco PIX firewall, and all my external users are failed to access in  the pop3 download even i have permitted 110/tcp in Cisco PIX.

My question are what exactly the protocols and the relevant ports for the SME pop3 download use to connect, beside the 110/tcp is permitted in firewall system, what other additional port is needed to concern in the SME?

[root@sme /root]# telnet 61.142.2.17 110
Trying 61.142.2.17 ...
Connected to 61.142.2.17 .
Escape character is '^]'.
Connection closed by foreign host.
[root@sme /root]#

Please advise.

Thank you.

TCP Port 110 should be the only port you need to open..

But when you permitted port TCP port 110, did you then open for all source ports and only restrict destination port ?

Mikkel,

TCP 110 is opened, the pop3 download only works if i permitted all ports in firewall system, but i have no issue with other ports such as like 21, 25, 80 etc

Thanks.

hmm.. sounds strange - I got no problems with my mail server when I only opens TCP port 110 (but I'm not using an SME mail server yet)....

The only solution I got back then, is to open all ports an then debug the trafic, to find out what port you need to open...
