Problem upgrading 5.6b7 to 5.6 (RAID)
« on: February 18, 2003, 05:29:01 AM »
I am getting an error trying to upgrade to the 5.6 developer release from my 5.6b7 install using RAID 0.

I get through the license prompt and the language and keyboard selection but then it complains it cannot mount /boot on /dev/hdc1 and suggests I enter "more options" to continue.

It then gives a python traceback and prompts to insert a floppy to save the crash information.  I have done that but I'm not sure the problem is really a bug, perhaps my configuration is causing it.

Some background:  I originally was running 4.1.2 on a single hardrive.  I then bought two more to do RAID.  Now my original 4.1.2 install is /dev/hdc (mounted under /mnt) and my RAID install is /dev/hda and /dev/hdb .  /dev/hdd is the cdrom.  It's a PII-450 with 128MB RAM.

Disabling /dev/hdc still resulted in the same error.  It's like it can't detect the RAID volumes.  I also tried passing various combinations of kernel parameters to no avail.

I would appreciate any suggestions people may have.  Also I would like to know if anyone else running 5.6b7 with RAID has been able to upgrade to 5.6 .

Thanks,

Jim Little

Well, first, you'd be much better off running your RAID from hda and hdc.  Second, I'd remove the 4.1.2 drive entirely while doing the 5.6 install; it seems likely it'd only confuse things.

FWIW, I did upgrade RAID 1 system under 5.6b7 to 5.6 release without any problems.

Thanks Dan,

Actually I did not have the 4.1.2 drive installed when I did the 5.6b7 install, I added it later to copy over my files and then never bothered to remove it (I had some customizations and it's nice to be able to check back now and then to see how I had did something).  Disabling hdc in the BIOS didn't solve my upgrade problem.  During my original install the cdrom was /dev/hdc and I later changed it to /dev/hdd when I put it the old 4.1.2 drive.  Could this be my problem?

WRT using hdc instead of hdb I was worried that my cdrom would slow down the drive it shared a channel with, I remember recommendations to keep your fast drives together.  Is it possible to change your configuration once you have it set up?

A correction to my original post, I am using RAID 1 not RAID 0 (of course).

Thanks,

Jim

Hi,

I’m having the same problem with upgrading my 5.6Beta7 system.

I’ve added 2 extra harddisks and have mounted them as ibays.

Any suggestions, other than removing the disks, unmount, upgrade and mount the disks again?

Regards

Dennis

No, because that's the only way to do it safely.

Just to close on this one I restored the cdrom to hdc, removed the fstab entry I had added and then the upgrade went fine.

Thanks for the help.
