Turn on public secure shell access under remote access in server manager or set it to private and vpn in which effectively puts you on the internal network.

Specify the address you want to connect from in the Remote Access panel. /server-manager/, /user-password/, and /user-manager/ all use this list to allow access.

thanks for that info

i have now tried that and i input my friends ip into this and a subnet of 255.255.etc
and got the msg does not appear to be a valid ip.
then i figured he was behind a firewall so i put in his network ip in the subnet mask
and SME accepted that
but he still cannot get access to the page
Would i have needed to reboot the server after this change or am i just doing something wrong ?

The panel just automates the process shown at http://www.e-smith.org/docs/howto/remote-mgr-access-howto.html. That does require you to restart httpd. That may have been the problem...

I've never seen the error about an invalid IP. Are you sure you didn't type something wrong? And yes, you need to use his internet IP.
