Fetchmail failing on email 1 of 94
« on: June 06, 2000, 10:16:28 PM »
Last night I ran fetchmail in verbose mode and have found the following
problem.  While I have 94 messages on the multi-drop mail server
fetchmail seems to choke on the first one.  I have considered using
another POP client to delete the email but I would like to fix the
problem rather than just treating the symptom.  Does anyone have any
idea why it is looking for other domains when it is checking email.  It
doesn't seem like it should need to do anything with a nameserver just
to grab email since it already has the IP address of my upstream
server (I replace the upstream server IP with xxx.xxx.xxx.x below).  Is
there a way to make it skip the first message or delete it off the server
so I can get the rest?

I updated to the latest fetchmail a long time ago when I had a
similar problem (though I never ran it in verbose mode so I don't know
what the error message was).

Here is the message running in -v mode (I could do it in -v -v if that would help):
fetchmail: nameserver failure while looking for tribe.com' during poll
of xxxx.xxx.xxx.x.
fetchmail: nameserver failure while looking for tribe.com' during poll
of xxxx.xxx.xxx.x.
fetchmail: nameserver failure while looking for netgeanie.com' during
poll of xxxx.xxx.xxx.x.
fetchmail: nameserver failure while looking for netgeanie.com' during
poll of xxxx.xxx.xxx.x.
........ not flushed
fetchmail: POP3> RETR 2
fetchmail: POP3< -ERR POP timeout
fetchmail: POP timeout
fetchmail: POP3> QUIT
fetchmail: POP3< +OK Pop server at www2.myisp.net signing off.
fetchmail: client/server protocol error while fetching from

fetchmail: Query status=4
fetchmail: normal termination, status 4

I was wondering if you received any solutions to this thread.  We're running into a similar problem where we believe a corrupt email (bad orgin) cloggs up our POP server, not allowing e-smith to retrieve any ensuing email.  I have to Telnet in to the server, locate and delete the bad email, then e-smith will be allowed to retrieve the mail.   I'd appreciate any info to rectify this issue.  Thank you
