some email addresses are rejected by my esmith
« on: June 09, 2000, 10:49:46 PM »
Some email addresses that i try to email, i get an error saying that my e-smith email server can't send the email.

here is the exact error

The message couldnot be sent because of one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was XXX@xxxxx.com. subject 'icms help', Account 'xxxx mail', server: 'mail.xxx.com', protocol:smtp, Server Response: '553 sorry, that domain isn't in my list of allowed rcpthosts(#5.7.1)', ....

okay, i then added the xxxxxx.com domain to my rcpthosts and it then sent the email... but it's silly to have to do this every time i find a domain that i can't send email to.  This only happens every so often, but it's still a problem i need fixed.

any help would be great.  thank you

I think I asked a similar question a whole ago. Best do a search and find that post. Im not sure if my situation was the same, but I was trying to use a web based email package on my esmith server. I had to configure the package to use localhost as the mail server, rather than the domain name.

I am not sure whether you have worked this out already and this is probably overdoing the explanation, but ....

The reason for the rcpthosts (a list all the domains that QMail will deliver/accept mail _to_) is to prevent your mail server accepting/delivering mail to recipients outside your network.  Otherwise anyone on the internet could connect to your server and use this server to propagate spam email messages to the world.

If you wish users inside your network to be able to send mail to recipients outside your network, you should you should specifically override the rcpthosts rules for these machines only.

By default e-smith is setup to allow relaying for users on the local subnet, (the IP mask can be set using the console based gui).  Additional sub nets can be added to this list via the web based manger (Security - Local networks).  It may also be worth checking the settings of the user's computer to ensure that they are not miss-configured and are "really" on the same subnet as the E-Smith server.

A search with Google for "rcpthost" gives a number of pages including; http://www.palomine.net/qmail/selectiverelay.html
