Topic: Network card compatability

Hi,

I need to replace the nic in the server - I have been offered a Genius NIC with a Realtek chipset - the previous Nic worked (LNEPCI II) but failed last week as part of a larger hardware crash.  I don't want to spend a lot on this NIC and as I said I can get it cheap in an auction, so does anyone use the server with the Realtek chipset?

Brand new Belkin NICs based on the current Realtek chipset are <£10 at PC World. By the time you've paid the postage for your auction-bought piece you'll have reached that price.

the simple answer is yes, it will work no problem with cards with realtek chipsets

Ture but do you want to supprt a DSG  company?  All of teh DSG companies have really rather dogey trading practices IMHO. Like putting customer returns back on the shelf "as new".  I have personal experience of this on two seperate occasions.

Not the point. Buying something as cheap as a Realtek based NIC at auction is not worth doing. They cost less than £10. It doesn't matter where you buy them.

I'd argue it is the point. Why support a multinational  company that treats it's customers with contempt when you can buy the same product from a myriad other places.

I didn't tell him to buy it from anyone in particular. I cited PCWorld because I happen to know their prices. He can buy wherever he chooses, as I said in my second post. The point isn't where the thing is bought, it's the fact that buying a <£10 NIC any other way than brand new isn't sensible.

As for your opinion of PCWorld. I'd strongly advise you not to pass opinions that may be libellous in a forum like this. You presented no evidence, just vented personal spleen. I should also add that any purchase you complain about at PCWorld would be replaced over the counter, so your opinion actually isn't worth very much.

And more than likely re shrink warped and put back onto the shelf to be sold again. If you care to read my orginal post you will see that I added a phrase similar to "I have personal experience of this".

How do you explain hand written notes, in an unknown hand, in side the manual for a "brand new" sound card that was incredably noisy or water inside a "brand new" kettle that subsequently turned out to leak.

Yes, both products where replaced (the second kettle was dry inside and didn't leak) but they would have fought *very* hard to not exchange without *all* the orginal packagingg/instructions etc...

Anyway seriously off topic and if  DSG wish to take me to court so be it.

Well I got the Genius card from the auction - the £7 included pnp, though I found one for £6 inc pnp after buying the other one!  My luck!  Anyway I will let you know how it goes when installing SME again.
