I followed several threads and How-To's on the subject and at first I was stumped. I went thru every configuration file that contained anything concerning eth connections. Everything seemed correct, eth0 and eth1 BOTH showed up in the config files and all the syntax seemed correct. Even the boot up post on the box showed both cards installed so this is when I decided to ask for help.
While I was waiting for an answer, I decided to dig into the hardware issues and in fact, it was a hardware issue. The second NIC was conflicting with the on board sound card (even though the sound card was dissabled in the bios). I simply moved the nic around on the PCI slots and after a few tries, BINGO.
It was just getting frustrating to me that the nic's (SME approved by the way) showed up correctly at post and the configurations were all correct. It never occured to be that it could be a hardware problem because the nic's showed up at post and this exact same hardware with the nic's in my original locations works on another box that has RH8.
A friend and I built 2 systems side by side for comparison reasons. So far I was winning until yesterday, lol. But now I'm in the lead again, WAY IN THE LEAD. Niether of us understand RH and my friend can't get anything to work on the first try. The nic situation was the first roadblock I have run into with my setup. My friend is still trying to get his Windows/Samba issues figured out (and half a dozed other issues). It's been over a month now and I'm up and fully running. File/Print/Web/Mail and finally ICS all running with 2 Web sites and custom DNS. I have actually been using my box in production as a file/print server for about 1 month and my friend has yet to hook his to his network. He's coming over this afternoon to wipe out and start from scratch with SME. with all the practice, I should be able to have him up and running in a couple of hours.
I just forgot to try the basics, next time I won't trust what the box reads at post up.
Sorry to go on but you wnated details!!!
