SMTP blocked?
« on: March 06, 2003, 04:19:03 AM »
Hello,

I am running SME server behind Linksys and am using Sympatico ADSL. I have noticed that I can not send out any email out if I use my SME email server as default server in Outlook but I can receive email without any problems.
The message is sent out successfully without any error but it never reaches the recepients and bounces back after a week or so with the following message"

I wasn't able to establish an SMTP connection. (#4.4.1)"

Does it mean that Sympatico is blocing SMTP port?

I will appreciate your advice.

Gigi

Despite the ADSL config, better check following first.
Possible your ISP blocked the 25 port and it is common in dynamic connection.
If above situration fit to your situ, go to server manager > Email setting> type in your ISP's smtp server name at ISP SMTP column.

If you sure it is not the ISP side config, check out the ADSL config with port forwarding of 25 to your linkage.

Hope it can help.

Gigi,

Thanks for your advice. I am already forwarding port 25 on my Linksys to my SME mail server. It use to work before when I had internet through cable modem. It stopped working after I switched to ADSL.

Thanks,

Sympatico blocks port 25, they think it cuts spam.

You must set your sme server to use Sympatico's SMTP server, check their website to see which one it is for your area.  It will be something like smtp1.sympatico.ca .

I tried this morning by adding Sympatico's SMTP server in my SME but still I could not send out emails.

Sorry I just read over your first post again and if you are using an e-mail client such as Outlook you should set the outgoing server in the client to be the sympatico SMTP server.  The SME setting is just for the webmail interface.

Why not test your connection first. Telnet out an in to your server on port 25.

telnet any.known.smpt.server 25

If it responds like:

220 mail.domain.com ESMTP (NO UCE) Fri, 7 Mar 2003 14:43:01 +0100 (CET)

Your ISP does not  block outgoing SMTP.

Do the oposite and telnet to your SME SMTP server to verify that your ISP does not block your incoming SMTP.

I'm on Sympatico and I can assure you they do block port 25.

http://www1.sympatico.ca/help/local/bell/mailsettings.bell.html

Set Outlook to connect to Sympatico directly to send mail, not to your SME box.

You can use SME to receive mail.

Hello Friends,

Jim is right, Sympatico is blocking SMTP port so I can not send out emails using SME. I am using Sympatico server name to send out emails. It works fine from home but I can not reply any email or send any email from using webmail from outside. So I think I may have to look for a different ISP. Thanks for your help.

No need. Check the "Other e-mail settings panel" carefully.

Dear friends,

Thanks a lot for your help. I did a spelling mistake in entering smtp server name in "The Other Email Settings" of SME. Now it is working. Thanks to GIGI, JIM & CHARLIE for their help.
