what is the "system" mail account?

I've installed 3.1 and am curious why I cannot send mail to root? Shouldn't I be able to??? I've installed other Linux variants and root has been where I've had system msgs sent - is there a standard I should be adopting for E-SMITH?

Check the documentation for qmail. I am pretty sure it won't let you send a message directly to root. There should be an alias for root, usually postmaster, in the setup.

Qmail was with a very high level of security.

Check /var/qmail/doc/INSTALL.alais.

Thank you Micheal, I'll look into the supplied link.

Now that you mentioned it, I beleive all my other installs were using regular sendmail, not qmail.

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, you can send messages to root, but they are forwarded to the email address that you define as the "admin" email address.

The MTA used in e-smith, qmail, never delivers email to root, as a security precaution.
