Getting SME server to accept user@[127.0.0.1]
« on: March 15, 2003, 03:08:03 AM »
Hi,

I am getting on very well now with the server despite some early problems - however, I need to get the server to accept mails addressed to:
user@[127.0.0.1]

Where the ip is of course my fixed ip address - SME does not know about this because I am behind a router.

Any suggestions? The virtual domain manager will not allow the creation of this domain.

Andrew.

Andrew,

It depends on a lot of things:

What type/brand of firewall (eg: hardware, software etc.)
How many external static IP's do you have?
How many other web/mail servers are there behind this firewall?
Can this SME box have it's own IP?

Hardware 3com firewall set to port forward SMTP requests to the local ip address of the SME server.

One - 195.166.147.102

> How many other web/mail servers are there behind this firewall?

One other mail server which deals with news2mail / mail2news gateways, but this is not an issue since E-smith deals with this via local users on the box forwarding to user@[192.168.1.3]

> Can this SME box have it's own IP?

It has its own internal ip which is 192.168.1.2

Hope this helps,
Andrew.

Andrew,

Are you trying to recieve these emails from behind the firewall our outside the firewall?

Hi Paul,

Yes, outside users were sending to this address.  I am not sure why this particular person did this, but as he pointed out this should be accepted as per the RFCs.  However, I understand that this could cause a problem, as the E-smith server doesn't know my real ip.

I,m a bit confused as to what you are trying to do, let's see if I have this right?

1-You have a NON-SME server with an ip of 192.168.1.3 that you use as an internal only news server.

2-You have an sme server with an ip of 192.168.1.2 that is set up as a mail server.

3-You have a 3com firewall/router with SMTP mail forewarded to 192.168.1.2.

4-You want to be able to recieve emails to userX@195.166.147.102 and have it forewarded to the sme server at 192.168.1.2.

If this is the case then it should work and you don't need a virtual domain.  Any email sent to userX@195.166.147.102 should automatically be forewarded to userX@your_domain_name_of_the_sme_server.com.  Of course you will have to set up userX, userY, userZ and so on in the sme box.
