webmail and pop3 combined
« on: March 21, 2003, 06:21:54 PM »
Hi everybody,
since the upgrade to 5.6 (even after update2) I have an annoying feature of webmail.
After I looked at my email from outside with webmail, the next time I read mail in with Outlook Express I receive all the emails again.
I have the email client set to retain mail on the server for three days so that I can still read it from outside even if the mail is popped.

Is there any setting I should alter or is this a bug?

Kind greetings,
Thony

I don't know the technical specifics behind it, but I assume this is from using IMAP and POP3 together. Accessing the messages via IMAP probably does something that makes POP3 think the messages are new again. I've seen this come up before, so it's not just a problem with your install or something.

Hi Bill, you are right that this is what is happening. But it shouldn't happen, nor did it happen under pre-5.6 installs of SME.
I did not change anything in my Outlook account, BTW.
I hope this is a matter of a config file that needs tweaking.
It defeats the purpose of the webmail for me completely...

Hi,

I have seen this happen on professional hosting services also - because Imap is being used when using Webmail, you end up with the flags being rest on messages.

Outlook Express contains good imap support, why not think about switching to Imap for accounts that need Webmail access also?

Andrew.
