Regarding general setup of Hylafax I can recommend that you read:
http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/dmay/mitel/contrib/HylaFAX/hylafax-howto.htmlThe above is SME specific, but you can get a LOT of information about fax clients (email/printer/web) and trouble shooting on the hylafax.org homepage.
Take a look at the HylaFax HowTo:

Yes - You can send a fax as an email. But my own opinion is that it's not very practical - when sending email to fax there is just a simple check for a phone number in the email (so dont send fax'es with phone number). Look at the links above to hylafax.org

Open WHFC, Select Fax->System Preferences, Specify your servername.
This basic setup is completed by selecting the OK button.
After this you will have 3 buttons on the top of the WHFC window, marked as:
S (send queue) R (receive queue) D(done queue)
Select any of these 3, and in the gray window just below your name/email you will now see the connection status.
Normally this will show:
HylaFax scheduler on (servername): Running
Modem ttyS? (your fax phone number): Running and idle
If you dont get this - check your system preferences again, or re-check your installation of HylaFax on your server.
