I understand the security issues with NFS but I need to access one server from another for daily backup both servers are only part of a WAN and not the WWW plus I wont to try and only activate NFS at certain time of the day. My question is (if any one can help me) is does both servers need NFS running or do I only need NFS on the sever I wish to access

BTW do not get clearly what you are telling......

lets see:-

1) you may install on both or either depending whether you are  going to mount nfs filesystem on both or either from your workstation.

2) you may install on both if you one server is mounting on nfs on the other server and your workstation is mount nfs to that one server.

All needs portmapper running as well and remember to enable hosts.allow for the nfs etc so you can be connected.

If you need to do backup from one to another you should to try RSYNC (and his version for SME named UNISON).

It allow you to do a rsync between TWO SME using WEB PAGE to configure!
