Outgoing MS VPN from SME5.6
« on: April 14, 2003, 10:25:24 PM »
Hi,

I am currently using SME5.6 on my home router.  I regularly dial into the office using Microsoft VPN through a Win98SE PC connected to the router.   I could not get connected half the time and if I do, they are always very slow and will not stay for more than a few minutes.  This started happening since I upgraded to 5.6.  (I did a fresh install.)

On my laptop running W2K, it is a little bit better but still not enough for my to do some useful work before I get disconnected.

When I use an off-the-shelf Dlink router, I can get connected so I think that is is not our VPN server or ISP.  Anybody have any ideas/tips on what to do?

Cheers,
Manny

I saw this bug report.  However, my problem is with unreliable outgoing PPTP.  My understanding is that this is for incoming PPTP connections.  In fact, the workaround mentions that "disabling these modules will prevent outgoing PPTP connections from working."

I am on my home PC connected to the Internet through an SME5.6 gateway and I want to establish a VPN connection to our office network.     I'm sorry if I did not explain the problem properly.

Cheers,

Apply the fix as shown in the bug page. The description needs some interpretation.
It will probably fix your problem as I also experienced a similar issue. I was hesitant to apply the bug workaround for the same reasons as yourself, but Mitel are referring to multiple Win2K connections that will be disabled, not a single connection.
A search for vpn pptp (date 60days) would have found this:

Bill and Ray,

It looks like it did the trick.  Thanks a lot.

Hi Manny,

The workaround is not a one size fits all fix.

I have found with the workaround in place, some sites will connect, others will not, until I reboot the server at my end. After a reboot, some of the sites I could not connect to before, I can now, BUT some of the site I could connect to before, now I can't ! No specific pattern to how or why. As I need to do a fair bit of remote server management, I'm not upgrading a lot of the sites out there that's still on older SME versions. As long as I'm not using 5.6 from this end, I have no trouble at all connecting to ALL remote sites which are not on 5.6 (which means from time to time, I need to dial up through my old 56K ISP account from a laptop or my desktop to get to some of these sites !).
