DNS entries again... - Orville Carter -

Thank you, Orville, for your time. Well, I still don´t find enough places to enter all the addresses that my ISP needs. I hope you can bear with this problem once more...

The whole story:
I bought E-smith 3.0, and it was easily installed. It found my two network cards, and the e-smith server works beautifully within my LAN. But it does simply not find my ISP!

I have been sharing Internet to my LAN through a W98 PC with NAT and two network cards, which has worked fine (except for the usual Windows crashes, of course). Now, I just want to exchange the Windows server for e-smith, since I need a reliable OS for my server.

Here is the setup of addresses my ISP needs in Windows 98, and it works fine in Windows (I have altered the first six figures of the addresses in this message):

IP-address:        123.456.36.39
Net mask:          255.255.255.149
Gateway:           123.456.36.1

Enable DNS:
Host:                 91084321
Domain:             elos.se
DNS-server:        123.456.36.2

In my own LAN I use static IP-addresses:
e-smith:             192.168.0.4
PCs in LAN:         192.168.0.1-3
Domain:              thorelius.com (yes, it is registered) I have tried elos.se too.
Also the proper server and workgroup names, e-smith works fine within my LAN.

Please, where do I enter all the data needed by my ISP?

Lars

Lars,
I am glad to assist. The pleasure is all mine. I am going to stay with you all the way.

Question? Do you have access top the control console on e-smith?
Can you review the e-smith server settings?

Thanks.
I guess I have top access, since I installed the server... In Control Console my server settings are:

Dedicated server and gateway
IP = 123.456.36.39
Subnet = 255.255.255.149
Gateway = 123.456.36.1

As of DHCP, I have tried both Off and On. When On, ethernet card 1 has not been able to initiate on boot up (I guess that is natural, since I have not been able to enter the other needed addresses).

When trying DHCP on, I have only had the option of connecting to two predetermined DNS services suggested by e-smith. There is an alternative called Custom, saying I need e-smith technical support. I really don t feel like spending $195 on an address...;-)

AH HA!
Both Nic cards should init on boot even if ip's are not set. The initialization of the nic
on boot is first a hardware init. The ip addreses come later.
You need to have that card working correctly.

Are you using identical network cards? What make cards? I have had some problems using different manufacturer nic's of some "flavors" of Linux. New Linux users should keep things simple while gaining experience.

If you are in the USA or Canada we could go over some detail on a phone call (my treat). Just say the word.

The two cards are identical, Micronet SP 2082A. E-smith found both automatically since they are Realtek 8029 compatible, using the ne2k-pci driver. Both cards are initiated fine when I do not try DHCP, which I find obvious since the card can t find the IP address to the DNS service (which I don t know where to write, which is the basic problem...;-)).

Actually, I don t think there is any problem with my hardware. As far as I understand this problem (NOT being experienced in linux) e-smith lacks input lines for Host, Domain and DNS-server in the Control Console. The domain setup in the web based e-smith manager seems to handle my own LAN, right?

I live in Sweden, which would make telephone contact a little expensive, and the time difference of 6-8 hours is not very convenient either. I hope we can solve the problm this way.

Hi,

recently had problems with my NIC's as well. The NIC was found, but no connection to the 'outside world' was
brought up. I replaced the NIC with another one, (I was sure it worked, because it came out of one of the client-PC's that operated nicely on the LAN) and hear-hear all of a sudden it was all working properly...

I don't remember now (not behind the esmith machine), but I just entered the IP, subnetmask en gateway of my ISP (i.c. University) in the esmith menu and it worked right away...

Regards,
Rolf

PS why does your ISP have only a limited part of the subnet?

Rolf,
thank you for your comments. I have no idea why my ISP s setup looks the way it does...

Lars,
I guess thats the advantege of being so close to the source - and having a DSL line.
The *.iso cd-rom image was downloaded, and cd recreated on my cd-rom burner.

We did try e-smith 3 for a short time, but users on this forum recommended 4.0.
Its just great. Some of the users on this forum are really good. I have learned quite
a lot about e-smith server (and Linux) just be reading questions and answers on this forum.

I would suggest installing e-smith 4.0b7 ASAP. Its a very stable version.
