Topic: high collision rate on eth0 ??

the collision rate is high for eth0 can this be a fault with the card? there are only 3 computers on the network.usually only one on at a time ,sometimes 2 .any advice would be appreciated. thanks

What is used to connect the machines together, a hub or a switch? Are all cards on the network capable of full duplex? If so are they working in that mode?

eth0 is a 3com 3c59x connected to a netgear 10base hub ,the other cards in the workstations are realtek 8139,8029 cards ,not sure if they are capable of full duplex.

If it is a only a hub that  is probalbly part of the problem.  Hubs transmit what ever comes in on one port out of all the others, a switch looks at the packets and only sends tto the correct port.

Manufactures web sites can be most enlighting when faced with an unknown bit of kit.

the collisionrate is to high !
Mostly one (or more) Ethernetcard is bad. Once I had such a problen with an 100 Mbit HUB.
Replace parts an everthing is OK again.

thanks for the info ,so i should invest in a 10/100 switch then and see if the problem still exists? i have noticed that esmith installs the  3com card as a 100baseTX vortex would this be a problem as well?

A switch is probably worth it anyway.  I don't know where in the world you are but in the UK a 5 port switch is around GBP40 inc VAT and delivery. Indeed you can get a Netgear 5 port switch, 2 PCI NICs and two 5M cables for that price, (Netgear starter kit FB105)., or if your really daft just the switch for the same money...

im in australia ,i can get a  compex 8 port 10/100  switch for $60 aust ,or the netgear fs108  8 port 10/100 for $165  ,how much difference could there be between the two brands?

Not heard of Compex in the UK, unless they call themselves something different. Didging on the web showed boxes that don't look like anything on the market here but a box is only a box...

Netgear are one of the large budget end of the market suppliers of kit in the UK. That price is comparable to the fully inclusive price  over here but significant more for the  exclusive price.  You need local knowledge or a dig on the makers websites and a close look at the specs (amount of buffer memory might be an issue). Anyway this is getting off topic for this forum, but no e-mail address supplied to respond directly.

1.: on a switcht port are NO collisions !!!!!
2.: much to expensive !!! try ebay or something like this or look for Internetshops. In Germany you pay  about € 40,- for a 8-Portswitch and € 6,- for a 10/100-Card.

i purchased the cheaper 10/100 switch which improved the network performance heaps ,but i was still having the collision problem ,shutdown the server replaced the 3com with another realtek 8139  and it works perfectly now not one collision ,so i guess the card had a problem .thanks for the help
