Can't see I-Bays in Win 2000
« on: May 03, 2003, 07:34:47 PM »
Hi,

I'm having something screwy going on. I have a network with an SME-Server 5.5, Windows 2000 Server, Windows 98 Machine. The Windows 2000 Server can't see or connect to i-bays on SME Server even though it can ping it, and the server (but no shares) appears in Windows Explorer. I have recently installed backup2ws, and this is doing nothing when I tell it to backup...  All machines can ping each other by name....

Not even sure where to start looking....

- Want SAMBA to work so i-bays are accessible
- Want Backup2ws to work...

What's installed on SME Server
- SME 5.5 updated to update 6
- PHPHelpDesk App
- Secure Remote Mail
- User Manager Panel
- Backup2WS

Would love some pointers even how to troubleshoot / where to look... I seem to have been searching the forums and net for days...

Thanks in advance

Paul

We need a little more details.

Do you have 1 or 2 NIC's in the SME machine?

Is the SME box set up as "server and gateway", "private server and gateway" or "server only"?

Are you behind another firewall?

Can the W98 machine see the ibays?

OK : E-Smith 5.5 is set up Server only...
It's behind a firewall - but Win 2000 Server, E-Smith 5.5, Win98 machine all on same subnet...

Win98 machine : Took some mucking around today - but I've got this so this will now log into the E-Smith server and it's finding the i-bays no problem...

As for the Win 2K Server : It can see the E-Smith Server in it's network neighbourhood : and I'm logged onto NT using a userid password that's identical to a good e-smith one (and same userid password that worked from Win 98 Server to see the ibay's) but I get the message :

\ is not accessible.

The network path was not found

Any ideas where to go now ???

(BTW : Thanks heaps for the help)

Is either the e-smith server or the w2000 server set up as a domain server or do you just have them set up in a workgroup?

I know for certain that the Win 2K Server is not set up as domain server.

I'm not sure about the e-smith server: I didn't set it up this way deliberately. How do I check for this ?

(BTW : I would quite like to integrate them all and have PROLLY the Win2000 server set up as domain controller : but haven't bitten the bullet on this yet)

O.K. this sounds like you have a basic workgroup set up so lets start out with the basics.

1-I have read that NetBios and IPX are NOT compatable with Samba so you MUST turn these protocals off on you network connections on the windows machines.  You only need TCP/IP.

2-Set all your machines on the same workgroup in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS.

3-In the server-manager go to "workgroups", make sure the Windows workgroup name is in capital letters, Workgroup and domain controller is set to no, and Raoming profiles is also set to no.

4-Go to "user accounts and set up 2 users the same as you use to log on to your windows machines.

5-Go to "groups" and set up a group and add everyone to it.

6-Make sure you have your permissions set right in you ibay.

Make sure you press the "save" button at the bottom of each configuration page to make sure your configuration is saved and the corrosponding service is re-started.

Now turn off ALL of the machines and boot the e-smith one first, then the windows machines and see what happens.

There are a couple of howtos on windows 2000/XP that have to do with these types of problems but I want to make sure everything is set right before you start messing with your windows machines.

I had the same experience with my first try but after making sure my settings were right and saving them then re-booting the whole thing came together for me.

Hi Paul,

Tried all the suggestions...

I even changed the Win 2000 Server to another Workgroup : and then changed it back to the initial workgroupn just to ensure it really rewrote and got the case uppercase etc...

E-Smith did have workgroup in mixed case : and this has been changed to All Caps...

All machines have been rebooted several times...

STILL the Win98 box can see the shares on E-Smith beautifully : but Win2000 can't see them at all...  It see's the e-smith box - but when I click on it or try to see if there are any i-bays - it reports "the network path was not found" or something similar (depending on the access method).  Curiously, it appears that the Win98 group has some dependancy on the Win2000 server : as when the Win2000 server is shut down, it can't see the workgroup (or esmith server) at all : but once the Windows 2000 Server is up : Win98 can see e-smith and connect to any of the i-bays... Meanwhile : the Win2000 server NEVER see's any i-bays....

Any more ideas ????

I'm quite stuck....

Thanks in advance : really do appreciate the generous help...

It sounds like the w2000 box may be set as a domain controler.  If this is the case then this is getting a little above my head.  Because it is w2000 server, I am not sure exactly how it works, I know a bit about w2000 professional but not server.

Try the following and see if you can get to the primary directory on the e-smith box:

Open up your web browser and type in the following in the address bar:

\your_server_name\primary

this SHOULD present you with a log-on box

Put "admin" as the user and your admin password for the password and see if it let's you in.

OK : I've tried the final suggestion (doing a connect) : and STILL the Win 2000 Server resolutely refuses to talk to the e-smith box (even though the e-smith box can ping the Win 2000 Server and visa versa : and the Win98 Box can look at e-smith no problems : the Win 2000 box keeps saying the server doesn't exist - even though it shows the server within the network neighbourhood - just with no shares)...

I've even tried making the e-smith box a domain controller - and getting the win2000 server to join the domain - but it claims the computer doesn't exist...

If there are any suggestions I'd greatly appreciate it...

(BTW : Paul : Thanks heaps for your help)

Well I just don't know what could be wrong.  It must have something to with Windows 2000 "server".

Your problem seems to be an authentication problem, the e-smith box doesn't like the way your W2000 server is trying to authenticate.  I remember reading some How To's on W2000 and WXP clients but for the life of me I can't find them now.  I had simular problems when I first set up my server and WXP but it just "went away".

There is a DOS command to look at all network connections in windows at the command prompt. See if you have any wierd connections and remove them as a matter of fact, remove ALL connections, you can restore them if needed later.

C:\> net use

You can also use this command to disconect and connect shares. Try adding the share manually.

C:\> net use \servername\sharename
(C:\> net use \your_server_name\primary should connect to the primary folder that every user has access to)
C:\> net use \servername\sharename /delete

Good Luck.

BTW, pinging only confirms that a particular nework card is able to send and receive data from another source.  It can be used to varify that an IP address or domain name is alive.  It in no way constitutes access.  I can ping, lets say the CIA server, but that doesn't mean I can gain access.  Pinging only varifies that the NIC cards are working.

Well I would say that is a very good clue !
Unfortunately I am not familiar with Win 2000 Server setups but  there is obviously a "clash" between sme and Win2K server. Could it be your "WINS" configuration ?
"Browsemaster" is another that comes to mind.

This is very similar to some issues that another user had, try reading through this thread for some useful hints. You will have to read a lot to find the bits that are applicable, so don't dismiss this thread (or the others I mention below) based on the subject of the initial post.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not putting you in the same category of user as rhys, but there is a lot of good information in the posts on this thread about setting up and checking your network etc..

http://www.e-smith.org/bboard//read.php?f=1&i=26689&t=26689

There were also a couple of other posts by the same person that may also have some useful suggestions scattered throughout the threads. Search on rhys (author) or try these that I found

Hope this helps, and let us know if you find or don't find the answer, or for that matter soem more feedback on your progress.

Hi Ray,

Thanks for the suggestion... Rhys thread is fascinating both technically : the patience of those writing back : and the interpersonal aspects of this... All this said : getting back to getting my Win 2000 Server and E-Smith talking...

Configuration :

I have a firewall in a box product (I've been using E-Smith 4.1.2 for about 2 years - but it eventually got hacked : and I was 2000km's away : cost me $1000 with Telstra : so I had to get a mate to buy and install firewall in a box - which I've stuck with for extra security)....

Firewall in a box: 192.168.3.20 : DHCP switched off on this

NT 2000 Server : 192.168.3.75 : In standalone mode : workgroup not domain. This connect to E-Smith via DHCP

E-Smith : Server only : NOT domain server but has web and internet working correctly... just can't connect to the ibays from the Win 2000 Server....  Can connect from the Win 98 box (which is my dads business machine - so he's not keen for me to keep using it over and over again for testing)...

Still going through this : a few things to start with...

Note that the IP Routing is enabled... I don't know why - whether this is a problem - or how to switch it off :s
(Btw : keep in mind I'm doing all this remotely, 2000km's away, so it's hard to do things requiring disabling the network which I use to connect by)....

It appears you might have a couple of problems.

1-it appears that the 2 machines are on different domains,  w2000 = TrueNorthIS.com.au and e-smith on xxx.com.au.  I think your DNS server at True North is trying to do your name resolution and can't figure out what tnsv002 is.

try c:\> net use \192.168.3.1
or c:\> net use \192.168.3.1\primary
2-It gets complicated when you gateway is NOT your DHCP server, why do you have it set that way?

3-IP routing enabled on w2000 machine?

P.S. I'm sure you tried this on the w2000 box but maybe try again to see if it will correct the DNS issue.

c:\> ipconfig /release
c:\> ipconfig /renew

This SHOULD reset the connection.

Hi,

I have read all your adventure, and something is still not very clear; your w2k server appear to be a standalone server in a workgroup; For me, even if you use addresses from the 192....range, its look like your W2K server is a domain controller. If this is the case you must create in Active Directory Users and Computers,

1. the SAME user name that you use to log into your e-smith machine
2. a computer name, which is the SAME as your e-smith machine
3. and of course, give the accurate NTFS permissions

and if your W2K is not a DC. you must create this user & computer name by using MMC console.

Hi Paul,

It was late when I posted : hence crossed wires...

Some more clues : I'm really hoping people on the list can put the clues together as I'm struggling with them...

1) E-Smith and Win 2000 are on the same domain...  I was trying to be security conscious and blanked out the truenorthis with xxxx in a few places... but was too tired to be consistent everywhere... (poor form on my part)....  xxxx doesn't exist : please simply substitute TrueNorthIS where you see this

2) Initially, my gateway (ie the firewall in a box) was the DHCP server also... But I changed it when all this stopped working as a way of HOPEFULLY giving E-Smith more control over my network : hoping that it would communicate the right settings to Win 2000 when Win 2000 requested the DHCP connection (given TCP/IP in Win 2000 is set to get everything from the DHCP server)....

3) IP routing enabled... Don't know about this... If someone can tell me where this is set (and how to unset it) in Win 2000 I'd be grateful...  This is not something I wanted by design...

4) Have already tried ipconfig /release and /renew. Unfortunately this didn't help too much (except it did reset the IP to use E-Smiths DHCP range instead of the Firewalls DHCP server range : given that I've only recently switched the DHCP server OFF on the firewall)... Network restarts I can't do too often, as cause the server is 2000km's away, each time I do this I lose comms with the box and need to talk my father (who's not computer literate) through the second half of any such sequence... Reboots not a problem : but I need to get more creative about how to do things that will temporarily cut network comms....

5) I haven't tried net use and the IP Addy...
Will try this as soon as I get home (can't talk to the box from work : where I am now)....

Cheers : and thanks so much for the super help.
lol : reading Rhy's stuff earlier : the help on this group would be worth lots of money in microsoft scenario (and help of same quality).

I've been running 4.1.2 for a few years without probs, so I'm sure there is be a logical explanation for my probs getting win 2K to access the i-bays (everything else about e-smith working fine)...
